Leading up to his retirement, a New York craftsman trains his young protégé. This film captures transitional periods and the subjects lives. The stepping down and stepping up in a very personal business. You watch how years of service have build a connection between Locksmith and client and the journey a new recite will need to take to build these up.
This related wonderful to my Unit 7 project looking markets feeding London, that I later found where on the brink of collapse. With vendors that had be selling serving the community for 40 years
Personal I appreciate the way this documentary is shot, emphasising the personal nature of the business by documenting characters in confined limb spaces, often in close proximity of other people. I lovesdwhen this is shown in the penultimate shot, shown the retired locksmith at home, but still in a dimly lit room, before entering a bright open room with his family, showing his transition out of being a locksmith and into the rest of his life.
