‘The secret world of graphic design for filmmaking’ by Annie Atkins, 2017

This talk transformed how I understand the role of graphic communication design within worldbuilding. Rather than graphics being something to be noticed or admired, Annie Atkins describes them as elements and artefacts that have a subconscious, supportive role rather than something that demands considerable attention.

This idea  was important in my E&E project where we were designing a speculative future world. It made me see that artefacts e.g. signage, instructions, medical interfaces etc don’t need to be visually dominant to be effective. They subconsciously reinforce how the world functions, and how people behave within it.

This talk influenced how I think about designing systems and environments, where graphic design becomes part of a larger ecosystem rather than a standalone outcome.
