Paprika by Satoshi Kon, 2006

This film focuses on a technology which allows people to access, record and alter their dreams in a way which is supposed to help people live better by alleviating mental health or sleep issues. All is well until dreams and reality start merging into one.

This film is rather abstract and hard to follow but the messages behind it is really puts it into perspective. The movie intends to metaphorically and literally warns people of a two things:

  1. Corporations and how they could abuse invasive technology for their own personal gain. It also warns viewers to query underlying motivations behind corporations work
  2. Media overconsumption, specifically how it could lead people to lose grip on their reality in a future where we are consuming more than we are living or making

It is a good piece of fiction which makes you really think how one interacts with technology and the media which they consume. It is rich in food for thought especially in the modern day and as we slowly have our lives become more digital.
