Western Flag (Spindletop, Texas) is a 2017 video work by artist John Gerrard. The piece features a flagpole erected at the site of the legendary Spindletop oil field in Texas, continuously belching black digital smoke. This “flag” uses a visually oppressive image to metaphorize the oil industry as an emblem of modern capitalism and its ongoing pollution and crisis inflicted upon the global ecology.
