Overcomer (2016 short film)by Hannah Spangler

Overcomer is a 2016 animated short film directed by Hannah Spangler. It was uploaded to her YouTube channel on April 26, 2016, where it has received over 8 million views as of 2023.

It was a student project that was made for Hannah Grace’s Experimental Animation class at KVCC. Grace said that the film touched on her anxiety and depression in 2014, and has released this film for others to watch to overcome their anxieties and depression.

The film revolves around a girl from which the voices in her mind consistently tell her that she does not matter and that nobody cares about her. Then suddenly, a kid from a Facebook photo looks at the girl and attempts to befriend her.

When the girl sees the kid draw and then the kid tells the girl to draw, a phrase saying “You’re not talented.” passes on to the kid. The girl then continues to remember her past life, with her anxieties and depression “locking her” out of social life.

After this, the girl finds out the kid is locked in a similar fashion, since the phrase saying “You’re not talented.” passed on to the kid, then, the phrase “You’re unloved.” also gets passed to the kid. The kid looks at the girl, then the girl cries and hugs her, only to say to the viewer that they matter.

The girl wakes up, looks out to the window, and then text appears to the viewer saying “You can do this”.
