Dolly zoom is a camera technique when camera moves backwards while zooming in, or vice versa. Using this technique, the size of the subject remains the same, while the background changes dramatically.

While researching technical side of filming, I was reminded by a peculiar zooming scene in Alfred Hitchcock’s “Vertigo”, as I discovered dolly zoom. I feel like this exact zooming technique does not fail at creating psychological disorientation, confusion and emotional tension, making it a very powerful way to accurately depict character’s state of mind to the audience. With out motion project I experimented a lot with zooming both – while shooting, as well as post-production and editing, leading me to realisation that such “disruptions” are able to dictate tone just as effectively as obvious, such as content of film.
