Created in 2013, Humming Cork and Box Installation by Swiss artist Zimoun uses simple materials—DC motors, cork balls, and cardboard boxes—to build a large-scale sound installation.
Each motor moves a small cork ball that repeatedly taps against the surface of a cardboard box, producing a continuous humming and rhythmic sound.
Though each unit follows the same mechanical system, their small variations in speed and impact create an organic, almost living texture of noise.
The installation transforms a minimal mechanical setup into a hypnotic experience that blurs the line between order and chaos, precision and chance.
Zimoun’s work shares a conceptual link with my project through repetition and system-based motion.
While his boxes hum mechanically through endless movement, my Useless Delivery Box endlessly begins and cancels its own delivery.
Both works use mechanical loops to reveal the futility and beauty within automated systems.
Zimoun’s installation resonates with my idea of visualizing the emptiness of perfect efficiency—a system that functions perfectly, yet communicates emotion through its constant, meaningless rhythm.
