“Star of Fear, Star of Hope” written by Jo Hoestlandt and illustrated by Johanna Kang

The story used the lens of youth to convey powerful truths about humanity. The narrator doesn’t fully grasp the political or social forces at play, she simply feels the confusion of losing a friend because of differences she never before noticed. This unawareness makes the story even more moving, as it mirrors how children experience the world: without judgment, only with curiosity and affection.

Speaking to young audiences without oversimplifying complex emotions. I aim to explore how youth navigate differences, looking into how innocence can become awareness, and how that transition can be both painful and beautiful.
