La Boîte-en-valise (translated literally to ‘box in a suitcase’) are a series of mixed media assemblages by Marcel Duchamp. The boxes consist of a group of reproductions of the artist’s major works with one original piece, encased in a leather suitcase.
The aim was to reproduce his paintings and objects he like and collect them in as small a space as possible, creating a ‘portable museum’.
This idea of a portable museum was intriguing to me as a concept and I wanted to investigate this idea of curation as design. I felt this was relevant to my practice as I’m interested in archives and how artefacts/items can be used to construct a wider narrative.
